What To Buy.....Vac System or Side bagger

Hey there,
The mower I have used for fall/spring cleanups in the past (dfs solid bagger with built in deck blower) is now retired (read....DEAD) so I need to equip my 48" Toro Zmaster and possibly a 36 stander to pick up the leaves this fall. I typically bag the leaves on a weekly/ bi-weekly basis in the fall and then do a major cleanup with tarps ect. at the end of the season.

I am currently looking at 2 options

A Trac vac setup with the separate engine that throws everything in a standard 32 gallon brute $2000

OR an accelerator, grass gobbler ect. Side bagger $500 max?

If you have used either please post your experiences.

I know the metal side baggers are typically used on walk behinds so I am worried that it will fill up extremely fast on my z master....is this true?

How well does the side baggers collect the leaves, is the lawn left clean or is there chaff left over?

Any input is appreciated

Thanks!

grass gobbler turbo 10.

its two part grass gobbler holds about half what a walker hopper holds.

personally, if it were me id walk into the toro dealer and get a toro bagging system for your zmaster.... do it right or dont do it at all.
Thanks for the link I will check it out. Looked at the Toro ones and besides the fact that they are more than I am willing to spend I run solo most of the time so the DFS isn't that efficient with my setup. I am hoping that the side baggers are able to hold a fairly large amount of grass/leaves. From my past issues with the bagging system on my last mower, the less moving parts the better :)

I use a DR Leaf and Lawn Vac behind a a Husqvarna lawn tractor with a 54" deck. It leaves the lawn looking utterly spotless. I also have the extension hose so I can suck out flower beds and such. It packs the leaves tremendously well. I also have the discharge hose so I can dump it and blow all the leaves in the truck. This chops up the leaves again so I can really pack them in my truck. I'm happy with it so far.

I just ordered the Trac Vac 862 Pro. It uses two 44 gallon rubber maid pails.

I had a 36 JD WB with a bagger. Filled to fast.

Baggers as the ones on riders and ZTR's that use tubes to carry the debris tend to clog up too easy. With the trac vac having its own motor pulling the debris thus working with the cutting deck discharge force should not clog up and will further reduce the size of the debris. Thus reducing the volume and using less bags.

Cool, I actually have a similar model (it's the one with the single brute) that I used last fall on my 32 WB. While it did an excellent job sucking up the leaves it made the mower much harder to manuver and a pain to get into the small gates as the hoses and hot engine had to be disconnected and reconnected every time I needed to go through the opening. If you don't have to deal with the gates it should work great for you.

I'm actually thinking of hooking the engine up to my trailer to use as a truck loader since the engine is so powerful.

I heard that you can use them alone without the mower as a leaf loader. I would never use a WB to pull a Trac Vac. My 42" JD LT 180 is worn out so I am also getting a new 48" JD 300 to pull the Trac Vac.

Hope this increases my productivity a lot.

mine actually had the trash bin mounted over the deck and the engine mounted on the discharge side next to the drive belt Model 565KG...was a little hard to see over but it wasn't towing anything

sorry i was confused thought your JD was a WB.....but i see now you have the tractor type.

I started with a 21" Sears push and a 42" JD rider.

Then when they both died I bought a Honda 21 SP and a JD 36" WB. Now this year I will have the JD 48" rider soon.

Hey just follow up to this thread I ended up purchasing the Trac Vac Model 462 z Pro back in september. Have been running this with the high lift gator blades from stens and am very happy with the result. I can mow at full speed in a lawn with single layer of leaves no problem. If there are a ton of leaves I run over them with the side discharge to mulch em up and then reattach the vac and clean it all up. On average I have to empty my bin 2-3 times for an 8-10k lawn with one weeks worth of leaves. Whole process adds about 10-15 min to the time.
