When do you replace edger blades? (pics)

Had the camera handy today when i was changing the blade on my stick edger, was wondering how short you guys allow the blade to become before swapping.

I found that a longer blade does a better job of not leaving behind any uncut grass, allowing me to walk a bit faster than when using a shorter blade.
I also agree that a longer blade makes a better looking cut edge.
Lastly I prefer to put the new blade on and then the used blade on top of it just as in your picture except at a 90 degree angle (+ sign) to cut a wider edge.

Has anyone ever took it off and flipped it over. Mine always seem to wear so much more on one side. Common sense. but why not flip them over and use the side that isn't quite as worn.

This is an easy one..... when it stops cutting the grass that invades the walkway. A new blade will give me a great line.... when it starts to get sloppy, time for a new blade. I've found that blades don't last very long. I change them at least as often as I change newly sharpened blades on my mower. The mower is good for 10 hours.... the stick egder i'd guess is good for about 3 hours. Works out to be about the same number of lawns cut and edged for me.

Does anyone besides me use the sharpened blades? I love them and can tell a big difference in how fast and clean the blade cuts thru the grass and soil. I get mine from landscaper pro, i think, and the sharpened ones aren't much more $$ than the unsharpened ones, and they are actually a little thicker metal.

And yes, that's about how much wear I can get on my edger blades as well. The unsharpened ones I actually get less use out of on my stihl straight shaft edger, I think less of the blade is actually exposed on them. Dosn't take long and I'm pushing the gear head along the sidewalk, time for a new blade, lol. Good thing they have a wear plate on there...

the shorter the blade the faster the speed. Just so you'll know, a longer blade is slower.
a shorter blade may be easyer to rev, but a point on the tip of a long blade travels faster than a point on the blade closer the the rotation point, sort of like the center of a wheel seems to turn the slowest

Ummmm, no. Unless you have an edger that is a gutless POS, WOT will produce the same top speed (except for initially edgings, of course - once established, though - it should pretty much just be cutting grass...).

8" blade = 25.13" travel per revolution. Stihl = 6750 rpm's with a 1:1 gear ratio. Thus, a blade travel of 25.13" x 6750rpm = 169,627.50" per minute = blade tip speed of 161.86mph...

6" blade (1" off each side) = 18.85" ... = 121.41mph.

3/4 the length = 3/4 the speed...

it's my fault. I was thinking of something alittle different. Your right though.

As far as edgers go, I haven't used my 265 much to notice a change in cut. LOL It does a nice job though. :) Plus I ordered a Edgit to try. I'm curious how well it does at trimming small flat areas that my mower can't reach. Most of my customers yards are plenty big enough for my 61" deck but there's a few places it can't get. I'd rather use a trimmer then get the push mower out. The video says it creates a small vacuum on the grass and leaves a cleaner cut so we'll soon find out.

I love it for this. It's almost impossible to scalp with. One of my customers has a single patch of grass that's maybe 6'x8' waaaay up in their backyard. A total bear to take even the 21" to - so I always just trim the whole thing. Works great and is fast.

One other great thing about the EdgeIt is that my edges have gone from being 8" wide from the fence to 14" or so. It makes it that much easier to race around the perimeter without the risks of making such a dedicated effort to mow just as close as possible to all those obstacles...
