So my 27hp Kohler started acting up today. Why wouldn't it? I'm already behind schedule. It's on an '07 Exmark Lazer Z with about 670 hours. It clearly sounds like it's losing spark to one cylinder which I'm assuming is a bad coil. I put a spark tester on but of course it won't do it again while that's on. It's intermittent. But you can clearly hear the difference when it goes. And when I engage the PTO and try moving it's really struggling. Every place I called today weren't sure what ignition coils I have. I've heard about those DSAI ones that were problems and the MDI conversion kit but no one has been able to give me a clear answer as to what I need to order. Or if I even have the DSAI system. There is a little square black box on the side of the engine shroud that I was told was a digital thing for the ignition. But I don't know. Apparently I suck at google cuz I can't find what I need on there either Does anyone know what I need based of this engine sticker?! I need to get it up and running ASAP! Thanks for any help!

If you have a black box on the engine shroud.. you've got DSAM ignition..
The coils have 2 wires on them...
The DSAI coils have 3 wires on them and no black box..
I'm not sure of the serial number break when they stopped making the ASAM ... analog SAM module ..and started making the DSAM.. digital module..
If the 4 wires going to the coils from the black box are different colors you have the Digital SAM...if the wires only have 2 colors.. yellow and brown...you have the Analog SAM.
If it's the DSAM ...order the MDI conversion kit....your engine will thank you..
If it's the ASAM...you'd have to replace the flywheel as well...no parts available..

I do have the black digital module box on the side of the shroud. The top of the shroud has 2 access panels that I took off and can see the left side coil has 2 wires going to it (a red one and a brown one). The rest got side coil has 2 wires as well (a yellow one and a brown one). I’m hoping this means I have the DSAM and not the ASAM so I can do the conversion. From your reply it looks like both coils would have to be yellow and brown to be the ASAM. I’ve been searching for instructions on installation of the kit but all I keep finding is pictures of the kit itself. “Tarryl fixes all” on YouTube has an awesome step by step video but it covers the DSAI version. I believe most of the installation procedure is the same except the DSAI doesn’t have the box.

You've got a DSAM ..
Order the MDI kit..
Remove the DSAI coils and coil harness...
Install the new coils...set the air gap at .009 .
Install the new coil harness .
Remove the terminal end off the white wire and install the new terminal that comes in the kit...
Tape off the red wire no longer in use..
Wire tie the harness...
Done.
