Change oil filter every oil change or no?

I was reading the engine owner's manual this morning to my new mower (I know......I was just looking for something to read while doing my morning business) and it said change oil first 8 hours then every 100 hours after and change oil filter every 200 hours. I really don't like to go more than about 50 hours between changes but I change the filter every time. Don't make much sense to me to put clean oil in and leave a dirty filter and whatever oil is in the filter is dirty too? How do you guys do it?

Who makes the engine? Stihl does, what does Stihl say?

If Castrol said you could use half the oil in your car because they say their oil is superior in lubrication properties would you do it?

You're doing an apple and oranges comparision. If your oil pump doesn't have any oil then it doesn't pump oil. Bearings seize. Oil also acts as a coolant for the bearings.

Using an oil that is warranted to provide protection when used for it's intended purpose is all I'm doing. My Stihl dealer also told me the use of Amsoil at 80:1 was good and I could also use Stihl synthetic at that ratio too.

Every piece of equipment that I've ever used Amsoil at 80:1 is still in service today. The first piece (FC75 edger) was purchased in 2000.

i agree 100%. no way would i do a 100 to 1 mix.
I'll take a bit of smoke and carbon any day. The pennies saved on oil is not worth potential wear on engine.

I also do not deviate from what the manufacturer suggest for oil, if the manufacturer calls for 10-30w that's what I use, if Stihl says 50:1 that's the ratio I use.

I wander off on the 2 stroke oil but I try to follow the rest of the recommendations. The 2 stroke oil is kinda this and that. Stihl says 50:1 while Amsoil says 100:1. I kinda settle in the middle at 80:1. My mower engines, cars, truck etc. all get the weight oil that is recommended.

I see this debate on here a lot. The problem i have with what your doing is the waste of money part. By the time you spent all that extra money on maintenance that did not prolong the life of the motor you could have purchased a new motor. Your usind 4 oil filters to my 1. Your also adding triple the waste or in other words more carbon footprint then need be. I have always followed the manufaturer recomendations. My kawis are oil every 100 and filter every 200. Never lost a motor to date.
Every 200 for me too but I skip the 100 hour oil change and its not because I am a tree hugger either, any more frequent than the manufacture suggests is a waste.

I got you ALL beat, every night I drain my oil run it through a sock filter then into my centrifuge then after it leaves the centrifuge its pumped through a 30,10,3 micron filter bank. then back into the mower. As for the filter I cut it apart stretch the pleats out, wash it, then re pleat it, put it back in the canister, and mig weld it all back together.
really? You dont rering it too???

I typically do both at the same time, but if I get swamped and never made it up to get a filter (always have oil though...buy the 5 quart containers), I'll change the oil, remove the filter and empty the oil in it, then put it back on.

Unequivocally a resounding absolute YES!!

i would do new oil and filter every 100...if you're doing one might as well do the other...that's what you do on a car or anything else...change both at the same time...but i do think changing the oil at 50hrs is unecessary especially if you use synthetic oil

Im with you. Oil and filter change every 50 hours or so. Clean oil, clean filter.
Same here, new oil & filter every 50-100hrs depending on how degraded the oil looks and smells.
