Does anyone have any experience with the Honda "clones". I believe they are manufactured in China, and marketed under various names, but they are generally blue, and sold at places like Northern Tool or Harbor Freight.

I am restoring a Tote Gote (like an oversized minibike) and these motors are all over in the minibike forums, people seem to really like them. Anyone had any real experience with them?

I am looking at a brand new 6.5hp one at Harbor Freight for $129.

Honda "clones" are throw away engines. It is next to impossible to get parts and only the air filters will fit from a true Honda engine and this if if you are lucky. Just had a generator in the shop a few months back and could not get parts for the carb and now the man is out $500 just because no one has a carb kit for it. Buy if you want to just remember it is a disposable engine.

I recently got one of these from Northern. Believe they call them "Powerhorse" engines. Worked great right out of the box. I used it to repower a power rake/dethatcher unit.
Regards warranty, it came with a 2 yrr. mfg. warranty and Nnrthern extended that to 4 years for an additional $20. Can't beat that.

Waste of $20. Good luck getting anything covered on it. Not sure who you would take it to other than ship it back to Northern.

Like people have said, if you do not plan to use it alot it will probably be fine. One word of caution, if you are doing the minibike for a kid to use...spend the money on a decent engine. Kids aint happy when the go-kart or minibike won't start.

For something that's not going to be used every day, I'd say go for it! Friend of mine bought one for his kid's go-cart. Any motor you put on one of those is going to just be thrashed before the first oil change anyway (the bouncing and wrecks) so the cheapo was the best option. It's still running though.

I'd definately not plan on trying to rebuild one (the chinese knockoffs) but usually there's not that much that goes wrong with a small engine that can't be cured with some carb adjustments or cleaning. (fuel related stuff). and hey, if it totally shoots crap, just buy another new one... you are still money ahead, lol.

Definately a disposable engine. I would still invest in a Briggs and Stratton for price and servicability. Before purchasing one of the cheap chinese makes myself. Been there sold them, no longer interested in doing so. The LCT and Yand dong or whatever they call them.

I ended up buying one, I'll let ya'll know how it goes. I actually got a lot of good feedback on them from another forum I go to. When it came down to it, I could get a brand new 6.5HP motor, with a 2 yr instant exchange warranty for $119. Even if it is "disposable" I'll get two years of guaranteed use, for $119. That is too good a deal to not try, especially on something like a tote gote that get abused and bounced around a lot.

I have predator 173cc on Toro 22" mower. I use that for commercial like daily and no issue for one year still start like champion. I cut extreme overgrown grass/weed that close to my height 6' tall also cut really thick grass too. Predator is basically gxv160 clone but alittle bigger and more powerful, 5.5hp also alot cheaper. Wen 173cc have same build. They are suitable for commercial grade/heavy duty use. Both have very good Durability. Any questions?
