One blade on my 44" toro will not cut...

Hi Everyone,

First off, just want to say thanks in advance for any help anyone here can provide since I am just getting into using a commercial walk behind mower....

Just purchased an older toro 44" proline today for a very reasonable price, and have found out why... The middle blade on the deck does not cut and spins freely as compared to the outside two blades when I put the deck up to turn the blades. All three should turn together, but the middle one turns freely.

So...here is my question: Would this be a bad spindle or something worse? I have not torn into the assembly yet, but will be doing so tomorrow afternoon.... The other two blades, although dull cut nicely, but the middle one is doing nothing...

I apologize for my lack of knowledge on this, and am just looking to get an idea of what I may be looking at. It wouldn't be something so simple as a shear pin would it?

Thanks again!!

I'm almost sure that the deck drive pulley (driven by the long belt from the engine) and the middle blade drive pulley are a stack unit. And the stack pulley and the middle spindle shaft are splined.

But if I'm wrong and the stack is actually two separate pulleys one atop the other, then the splines could be driving the top pulley, but the splines just below that could be stripped and not driving the under pulley.

You can go to www.Partstree.com to get a picture of it. Click on parts.

Enter Toro for brand

Enter 30144 for model number and a drawing of the deck will come up.

I can't tell if it is a stack for sure, but the quantity is 2 for the outer pulleys, and 1 for the middle which also has a longer shaft.

Hope the link helps.

Found the parts diagram... I am betting the pulley assembly is one unit too.

So...leaves me to think either the spindle is stripped, the pulley assembly is stripped, or a combination of both.

Now..interesting thing: In the diagram, it shows the top nut above a washer that must come off in order to remove the spindle. Looking at my set-up, the nut and washer on top of the pulley look like they are one unit and flush to each other, so I cannot get a wrench on the nut. That seems odd to me. Anyone else ever seen this type of thing before?

The tear down starts here soon...

I hate to relay this but was looking at the drawing again, and piece mark 36, p/n 47-0092, the middle spindle shaft, is discontinued. Don't panic.

mowersnmore.com says to call them concerning this part. Possibly they may have it. There's always the boneyards and eBay and there are lots of these old Toro wb's out there and parts off the Z decks are probably the same.

Just disassemble it and figure it out from there. I'm pretty sure the shaft comes out from the bottom.

got it apart... not too tough, but someone definitely tried to jury rig the thing to work. The spindle is shot as well as the pulley. The Jam nut was on upside-down, and the jam nut itself was worn off on the sides to the point I had to pound off the spacer that went around the jam nut.

So... with a new spindle and pulley along with new spacers and a new jam nut , the mower deck will be good to go. couple of days and I will be on my way and mowing.

Glad it was that easy to get it figured out... not too hard of a system to deal with.
