I know someone who gets a brush and applies a coat of old motor oil under the deck. He says it helps prevent rust and repels the grass from sticking on. It may be a good idea but I really don't want to paint under the deck of my lawn mower. Anybody done this before?

i know it would work but oil is not exactly something you want to be putting out in the environment like that is it? it is toxic to plants and could maybe harm the grass a bit after initial application.

i would not and i would use FF if you are going to consider anything, or slip plate graphite paint i hear works good

I know people who do this and they say it works, my I've tried it but not for me, but I do use the old oil on my hedge trimmers, I spray tem down when in use and afterwards keep them from rusting and getting to dry.

I third the FluidFilm. It also really dresses up & restores the plastics keeping your mower looking new [if that is important to you]
It should be but unfortunately most people just look at a mower as something to rag out that shouldn't be cleaned, but when you see those guys pull up to a house in a rust bucket truck/trailer with mowers that look like crap it says alot about who they are as a person, how they run business, and their quality of work.

So you guys believe fluid film is that great? Is there an alternative to fluid film? I would like to try it, but I have to order it unless some retailer carries it!!!
No it is great. You can get a free sample from a guy on here, just give him your address. Someone help me out what's his username? It might actually be Fluidfilm lol search for him, get a free sample.

Good, This spring weeds are hella building up on the deck.

Somethings I'd never in my wildest dreams think of! I've never put anything under the decks of my mowers, and there is absolutely no rust under any of my mower decks. How long do you think that oil is going to last.....more than say once or twice around the yard. My mowers see enough use so there isn't time for rust to build up. Just my .02

Its not the rust and etc. for me, its the build up under the deck that kills me and the cut quality.

I have, and it works, maybe not as good as FluidFilm but hey, old engine oil is free and always available. Also all that is needed is a thin coat, not slathered on, so no, oil is not dripping from underneath the deck.

No different than using the old plastic bags from the store to go on turd patrol in the yard for your dog vs buying bags instead. It takes up raw resources to make bags OR oil which has a effect on the environment. Most people don't think about that, more like poof- and it magically appears on the store shelf.

I just coated my trailer with old oil.
Using a brush, no spilling or sloppy dripping.

My vehicles use oil to the end of it's beneficial use {along with wix filters} of 7500 miles then, I use it some more.

But for my snow maintenance equipment, I use FF.

recycled used oil probably touches your life every day without you even knowing it. As consumers, we all benefit from recycling used motor oil. From augmenting our oil supplies and helping to generate heat, to protecting the environment, recycling oil just makes good sense....no dumping!

I agree 100%. The money you save too is nice.:cool2: I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my equipment which I always keep some of the old oil on hand to coat the bottom of the deck. Goes on nice and works well enough for me. The matted grass on the deck cleans off very easily when I use it as I mulch almost exclusively.

Same I think the cleaner the better! Oil and other films make it more sticky! Collecting more junk than a clean metal surface. I tryed some rubberized spray once and made it worst also I thought any ways.
